COMMITTEE ON PREPARATION FOR MINISTRY
Report to Presbytery ~ February 7, 2007

Doug Dent, Ruby Kleymann, John Lindhom, Gerald Olson, Clay Rosa, Iris Stevens, and Donna Buell (chair)

UPDATES ON CANDIDATES:

Ruth Goldthwaite (St. Cloud, First) certified ready to receive a call.  Ruth has begun work as chaplain at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise, ID.  She has initiated conversation with the Boise Presbytery and hopes to be examined for ordination at their Presbytery meeting at the end of April.  Our committee will work with the Boise COM/CPM to facilitate this process. Ruth writes: I absolutely want to have the ordination service in St. Cloud.  Minnesota Valleys is my church home and I can't imagine celebrating anywhere else.”  We’ll keep the Presbytery informed as things progress.

Sara Stegemann (Luverne,  First) in her senior year at Austin Theological Seminary.  Sara is scheduled to meet with our committee on February 17th for her final assessment.   We anticipate certifying Sara as “ready to receive a call” at that time.  Sara will have a busy spring as she is getting married in March, graduating from seminary in May, and will also be seeking her first call to Ministry of Word and Sacrament.

Jeremiah Knabe (Jackson, First) in his middler year at Princeton Theological Seminary.  Jeremiah is doing field work at a church and hopes to do CPE and take ordination exams this summer.  We expect to meet with Jeremiah for his annual consultation this summer.

UPDATES ON INQUIRERS

Chris Conlin (Mankato, First) Commissioned Lay Pastor at Kasota, professor of Microbiology at Mankato.  Chris is on a long term track toward ordination.  He is planning to take Greek or do CPE this summer. We will meet with him for annual consultation this summer.

NEW INQUIRERS:

Dan Voigt (Luverne, First) - The Session of Luverne Presbyterian Church has endorsed Daniel Voigt as an Inquirer and is recommending him to the Committee on Preparation for Ministry.  CPM will meet with Dan this summer to discern whether to enroll him as an Inquirer.

REQUESTS OF THE PRESBYTERY:

Please hold each of these persons in your thoughts and prayers.

If your congregation has someone who is considering ordination as a minister of word and sacrament, please contact the Committee on Preparation for Ministry as soon as possible so that we can begin working with them early in their discernment process.  An outline of the preparation process can be found in the Presbytery’s Manual of Operations.

OTHER COMMITTEE BUSINESS:

o   CPM welcomes our newest member, Iris Stevens.

o   CPM will have its first meeting of the year on February 17th

o   CPM will be preparing for our new role in working with assessing persons who have completed the Lay Pastor training program, recommending them to the Presbytery for Certification, and providing their ongoing support as Certified Lay Pastors until such time as they become Commissioned Lay Pastors and are transferred to the responsibility of Committee on Ministry.

o   CPM chair, Donna Buell, led New CPM Moderator training at the Annual Synod COM/CPM training event last week.  A representative of our Presbytery’s Committee on Preparation for Ministry will be on the planning team for next year’s Synod COM/CPM training event.

Respectfully Submitted,

Donna R. Buell

Chairperson, Committee on Preparation for Ministry
