Many, if not all of the
committees of presbytery awards grants
and scholarships to various conferences and events
throughout the year. This is done in
recognition of the need to educate clergy and lay
leaders in the presbytery.
In the interest of good
stewardship, any person applying for a grant or
scholarship is encouraged to think of them as
matching funds, with additional help coming from the
local church (for a lay person), continuing education
monies (for pastors) or the individual (in terms of
vacation time and/or personal monies).
Each committee makes its own
determination regarding which events are eligible for
grants or scholarships, the number of grants or
scholarships an individual can receive each year, and
the amount available for grants and scholarships.
Grants:
Grants are given for events in which a
committee picks up part or all of the
registration, transportation, and/or housing fees
associated for committee members. Grants
are considered part of the training costs associated
with the committee doing its business and included as
such in the committee's budget each year.
An event would qualify for a
grant when attendance is deemed in the best
interests of the committee and congruent with the
mission statement and goals of the committee.
Scholarships:
Scholarships are defined as the support a
committee offers to people in the presbytery to
encourage and support attendance at events which are of
benefit to the committee and it's work by
non-committee members. Scholarships
can be for partial amounts up to the full cost of
an event.
Individuals who are active in the
life of the local church, cluster or presbytery will
receive preference in the awarding of scholarships and
consideration will be given to the vacation time
given (in lieu of cash) for event attendance by lay
persons.
